Let’s look at the top seeds for the Qatar Open?

The top four Ladies players for the WTA 500 Qatar Open were seeded as follows:-

  • Iga Swiatek/POL
  • Jessica Pegula/USA
  • Caroline Garcia/FRA
  • Coco Gauff/USA

Iga Swiatek/POL

The Polish born 21 year old right handed player drew Danielle Collins (29 y.o.) of  the USA in her Round of 16. She quickly dispatched the American to the locker room defeating her swiftly in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. She passed through her Quarter Finals without playing a ball thanks to a Walkover against Berlinda Bencic/SUI who retired after her Round of 16 win against Russian Victoria Azarenka having won in three tough sets. Her Semi-Final against Veronika Kudermetova/RUS again was kept to two straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-1 to put her through to her Qatar WTA 500 Open Final 2023 for prize money of $74,161 USD.

Jessica Pegula/USA

The 28 year old right handed American seeded no.2, ranked no. 4 drew Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and having lost the first set 2-6 to the Latvian, came back to win in sets two and three, 6-2, 7-5. Her Quarter Final opponent was Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia whom she beat 6-3, 6-2. Next the Semi Final was against tough Greek gladiator Maria Sakkari who took the battle to three sets. Jessica eventually won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to secure her place in the Final against World No.1, Iga Swiatek/POL.

Caroline Garcia/FRA

Caroline duelled against Czech K.Mukova in her Round of 16 which proved to be a three set challenge. She lost the first set in a tie break 6-7 (3-7 TB) before launching her comeback over the next two sets 7-5, 6-4. Next she took on Maria Sakkari of Greece in the Quarter Final, who was in triumphant form, defeating the French player in three sets 2-6, 7-6 (7-5 TB), 6-4. Sadly that saw the exit of the No.3 seed from the Qatar Open.

Coco Gauff

The 1.75m 18 year old, WTA ranked No.6 from Delray Beach, USA, was set to be a reasonable certainty for the Qatar Open Final. Her Round of 16 started with a convincing win over the Czech veteran Petra Kvitova, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6 TB). She then matched up to Veronika Kudermetova who proved to be a worthy adversary. The first set went to the Russian, 6-2, but Coco was able to recover the second set with a reasonable 6-3 victory. However, it proved too much for this tournament as she collapsed to a strong final set from Veronika who defeated the American, 6-1. Her QF exit was a disappointing finish for Coco.

Qatar Total Energies WTA 500 Open Doha Final

It’s no real surprise that our final two players are the top two seeds, through to the final. Polish player, Iga Swiatek, no.1 seed is up against the no.2 seed, Jessica Pegula of USA. Will the Final go to three sets or will Iga be in her usual undefeatable form? Her lead in the WTA rankings suggest another straightforward victory for the 2022 winner.

The team at Zoe Alexander Tennis believes Jessica has sufficient power and self belief to topple the No.1 seed if she can get the first set victory. She is the underdog but could be crowned champion in the Final.
